The Three Minute Thesis Competition, originally developed by UQ, is a research communication competition that challenges PhD students to communicate the significance of their projects without the use of props or industry jargon, in just three minutes!

Dr Sarah Wayland, previous winner of the UNE 3MT Competition and finalist in the Trans-Tasman competition at UQ, puts it into perspective.

“80000 words into a three-minute presentation? That doesn’t sound so daunting until you realise that if you spoke those words in real time you’d be talking for more than nine hours.” Dr Wayland said.

The 3MT provides participants an opportunity to share and celebrate research while developing academic, presentation, and research communication skills.

Preparation for the event encourages the development of research candidate’s capacity to quickly and succinctly explain their research in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

The competition provides a fantastic showcase of some of the diverse higher degree research that is happening here at UNE.

The winner of the UNE competition will go on to compete in the Trans-Tasman competition, held at the University of Queensland in October.

The 3MT Final will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday 14 September, in the Lewis Lecture Theatre.
