Another video for you lucky things. In this week’s exciting update you will be amazed, awed and probably get a little bit emotional. You have been warned.

A lot of progress since I last looked at a post and just the two of you working on the site.
The early date of the layer you are excavating must be very exciting.
Dear Susan Tuffin. I expect that you are looking at my updates every day – nothing less. Richard Tuffin (Dr)
Hello Richard,
The wife and I are enjoying your videos and your dry wit. If those cobbles could talk, eh!
Thanks,
Jonathon
Jonathon. If they could talk then I would probably hit them harder with the mattock. Talking cobbles would be weird.
Hi Richard, Very exciting to see the older surface showing through, and thanks for posting this! I look forward to seeing any further extent. What is the circular feature? I’m assuming and this is associated with associated with later developments…
cheers, Ian.
Hi Ian. The round thing is still a bit of a mystery. It appears to be the base of a crane, though why they went to the effort of cutting the stones to a round shape beats me. It is from a late period (ca.1860s) when the area was being used as the ‘Mechanics’ Yard’. It therefore would have assisted the movement of heavy goods around the yard, as well as in and out of the foundry.
G’Day Dr Tuffin, that was archaeology ASMR right there!
Hello Nic G. Why, indeed it is. I am thinking of starting a channel on the youtube dedicated to the sounds of archaeology.
