A former Vice-Chancellor and UNE graduates from arts, education, natural resource management, health, and administrative leadership were recognised in this year’s Australia Day honours.

Former UNE Vice-Chancellor Emeritus Profession Ingrid Moses was awarded an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to higher education through senior academic management positions in Australian universities, and to a range of community and church organisations. She served as VC and President of UNE from 1997 to 2006.

Two other well-known UNE community members and Armidale locals, Ross Townsend and Dr Robin Jones, were awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division. Ross for service to the community of Armidale, and Robin for significant service to the community through support for refugees, as a contributor to social welfare assistance organisations, and to education.

Collectively UNE community members were awarded one Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia, five Members (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia, nine Medals (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division; one Emergency Services Medal (ESM); two Public Service Medals (PSM); one Australian Police Medal (APM) and two Conspicuous Service Medals (CSM).
