There is widespread interest in AI generative tools such as ChatGPT in the sector, and particularly a focus on the impact on learning and teaching. Education Futures has already been proactively working in this space, monitoring the sector landscape and staying at the forefront of adoption into our practice, and today a statement was circulated to UNE staff to provide an overall perspective on these tools in learning and teaching.

Here is a summary of the key points from the statement:

  • AI generative tools are already, and will more strongly become, key in the workforces of today and into the future
  • We encourage consideration of AI-generative tools in teaching and learning activities – this should include communication with students on appropriate use
  • UNE’s policy position around academic integrity is unchanged, and covers the inappropriate use of AI generative tools
  • Assessment design is one of the key enablers of assessment integrity

Teams within Education Futures can provide advisory and support around generative AI tools and assessment:

  • Digital Education can assist in considering AI-generative tools in teaching and learning, and provide advisory on maintaining academic integrity in assessment design.
  • The Academic Development team will be holding a series of webinars on these AI tools and their implications for assessment. The first will be offered on 6th March. Details will be provided shortly.

As developments in this space arise, Education Futures will provide updated advice and information to staff.  The full statement is available via Pulse News.
