A Value Chain Analysis of Australian Goat Meat Markets

Claire Adams – Postgraduate student, Centre for Global Food and Resources, University of Adelaide, Adelaide.

Abstract

The strengths, opportunities and challenges facing the goat meat industry of Australia are explored using value chain analysis. This industry is still largely opportunistic with a majority of goats processed for meat coming from rangeland, or considered to be feral goats. This ad hoc nature of the value chain allows for a number of different areas to be targeted for value adding, including ensuring a regular supply of the meat to both the domestic and export markets. The industry is not without its challenges including legislation, operational logistics and consumer perception and education.
