Following the success of Open Day 2016, UNE Business School hosted HSC Booster Day participants, consisting of 140 students for Business Studies, 40 for Economics and 60 for Legal Studies.

The dynamic Business Studies presenter was Mohan Dhall, a high school teacher of Business Studies and Legal Studies. Mohan is Director of the PLC Sydney Extension Centre and lectures at both the University of New South Wales and the University of Technology Sydney, and also authored and co-authored a wide range of resources for the  HSC Business and Legal Studies subjects.

Our Legal Studies presenter was John Andrews, an experienced teacher and Senior Marker of HSC Legal Studies. He has lectured widely to Legal Studies students throughout NSW, as well as presenting at a range of in-services for Legal Studies teachers and presenting a course to trainee teachers in Legal Studies teaching method.

Peter Kennedy was the Economics presenter – he is a Head Teacher/Teaching and Learning at Castle Hill High School who teaches HSC Economics. Peter has a particular interest in the economics of growth and development. Peter is an experienced marker of HSC and university level Economics and is currently a HSC Senior Marker. He is a co- writer of Economics workbooks with Tim Riley and frequently presents workshops to HSC students on how to improve their exam performance.

Schools who attended the day were locals like Armidale High School, Duval, PLC and TAS, but we were also able to provide these resources for schools from Tamworth, Manilla, Gunnedah, Inverell, Moree, Kempsey, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Grafton.

Teachers accompanying their students spoke highly of the presentations, noting that resources such as these give rural HSC students an excellent opportunity to prepare thoroughly for upcoming exams. Teachers were able to mix with UNE Business School staff at an informal morning tea, providing a great opportunity to network with other teachers and UNE staff.

Students noted that the presentations “gave great insight into what university lectures might be like”; commented that “there was some new and interesting information presented, and a few points that I was not too sure about were cleared up and explained. The booklets are brilliant, thank you!” and happily felt that “the day was really useful. We got good information about what future HSC questions might look like, how to answer them and what to focus on in our study.”

We wish all our attendees well in their final year of high school and their HSC exams!
