This post is part of our series about the individual experience of studying with UNE Business School – we’ll be talking to current students, graduates and alumni over the coming months. If you have a story to share, or know someone who does, let us know via email.
Dr Tsan Wang
Doctor of Philosophy – “Effects of Rural Land Policy and Land Use Change in China: A Dynamic Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Analysis”, conferred at UNE October 2017
Tsan has been in Australia for the past 5 years, pursuing her PhD study with UNE Business School. She comes to Armidale, NSW all the way from Zhengzhou, a capital city of Henan province in China.
Tsan has studied firstly in China, with a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering at Zhengzhou University – she then moved on to an MBA in Finance from Coventry University in the UK, before coming here for her PhD. Her previous work roles have included work as both a Senior Lecturer in the School of Economics and Management at Henan Agricultural University (HAU) in China, and an Economist, Senior Relationship Manager with the Bank of China in China.
UNE’s partnership with HAU meant that while working as a Senior Lecturer, Tsan was introduced to UNE Business School’s Professor Rene Villano during one of his visits overseas. This meeting lead to a recommendation from Rene to meet Professor Mahinda Siriwardana, who works with Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Analysis.
Tsan’s PhD thesis, “Effects of Rural Land Policy and Land Use Change in China: A Dynamic Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Analysis”, makes use of CGE modelling as a rigourous method of policy analysis. The application of this method is of great interest to many academic institutes and government authorities in China.
Besides our academic experts, we asked Tsan: why study in Armidale with UNE?
The peaceful life in Armidale is good for research. I also like the breathtaking natural scenery in Armidale. Actually, this is one of the most important reasons to me to study at UNE.
Tsan was able to balance her academic study with yoga, exercise, music, movies, reading and traveling during her time here, for a good balance.
Now she has graduated, Tsan is looking forward to the next stage of her career. She says “my goal right now is to find an academic position where I can use my research skills in assisting with the growth of this position and the institute, take on new challenges over time, and work with people I can really learn from.” On the horizon longer term are more publications, and Tsan’s establishment as an expert and key contributor in this area.
UNE Business School congratulates Tsan on the culmination of many years of hard work, and we hope to hear more of where her PhD from UNE will take her next!
