Unit Coordinator Valerie Dalton shares:
“The UN developed the Global Compact to guide business in developing sustainable practices and established standards to assist businesses to assess their behavior in relation to ethical practices. There are 8 Principles in the Global compact across three themes- human rights, labour standards, environment and anti-corruption. The UN also established the Millenium Development Goals which have now been revised to the Sustainable Development Goals which aim to reduce global extreme poverty across eight areas including working to eradicate extreme hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and ensuring environmental sustainability. The UN developed PRME to assist educators in teaching future managers how to manage within the framework of the Global Compact. UNE has been a signatory to PRME since 2009 and have submitted reports on our progress across the six principles every 18 months as part of that commitment. We developed our own principles for how we would embed sustainability in our curriculum in 2010 and that commitment continues. PRME is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and its focus is to see business schools working to specifically discuss the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within curriculum.
MM200 Managing People and Organisations always uses a real case study for the major assignment. On 24 July 2017, we are delighted to host Lachlan Feggans, the Senior Sustainability Manager for Brambles Australia. Brambles have made a significant commitment to sustainability and to working within the Global Compact. Their 2016 sustainability report demonstrates the excellent work that they are doing in this space including how they are contributing to the SDG’s. Lachlan will be speaking about his role and the work that Brambles are doing to meet their commitments. Students will use the case as the basis for their major assignment”.
