Some may think that being apart for the past 10 weeks due to COVID-19 would see the college community drift apart, but nothing could be further from the truth for Duval College. As part of Duval’s passion for charity participation and giving everything a go, a team of 67 residents, staff and friends competed the ‘50k for May’ Multiple Sclerosis challenge. One month later and the college has raised an incredible $11,120 (still counting) and as a team, we have walked 3,061.10km. Amongst the 3,194 teams registered for the ’50k for May’, Duval is sitting pretty at #26, an accomplishment we are all very proud of.

Along the way we have heard some great stories:

Duval’s Senior Common Room member, Rose McCarthy and Office Manager, Katy Saint, met and walked together most days during the month – accompanied by Rose’s dog, Jess. Rose was our biggest fundraiser and walked a massive 202km! Katy put in a solid effort at 129km. Several times they were joined by Duval residents (currently residing at Wright College) Matthew McCauley & Jade Cooksley to work on their tally. The group’s largest walk being 12kms long.

Duval resident Amy Steer, from Cannawigara (near Bordertown, SA) inspired us all, walking for a friend with MS, Sue Griffiths. Amy admits she hadn’t done much walking before but smashed her 50km target, walking a total of 74km. Amy posted beautiful photos taken around her district which motivated other residents to do the same.

Our Duval community will be even stronger on the other side of this pandemic. College is much more than a building and it is amazing what can be achieved when you do it together.
