The Toomelah Boggabilla Adult Literacy Campaign will launch on Friday 12 May, making Toomelah the sixth community to join.  The campaign provides  Indigenous adults with literacy skills with flow-on health and well-being benefits not just for them, but for their whole communities.

The campaign began in 2012, when A/Prof. Bob Boughton, together with Adjunct Professor Jack Beetson and the Literacy for Life Foundation, introduced the Cuban-based literacy program “Yes I can” to improve adult literacy in Aboriginal communities in Central West NSW.  The life-changing campaign had immediate impact and, by 2016, had graduated over 100 adults. Completion rates are around 67% – more than five times higher than the national average for formal training courses for this group.
