Online examinations (OLX) offer some key opportunities for assessment practice that aren’t possible in paper-based examinations. One of the really exciting examples of this is the integration of rich media – multimedia and interactive media – into digital assessments. Integrating rich media offers some significant possibilities around assessing higher-order thinking, professional skills, authentic scenarios and case studies.

Some of the options for rich media integration include audio, video, H5P activities, animations, Pedestal3D objects, interactive media widgets and more. It’s not just for OLX either – since OLX are built using Moodle quizzes, rich media can be used to enhance any quiz-based assessment. In fact, rich media can be integrated into any form of assessment in Moodle via the rich text editor – the only limit is your imagination.

The OLXi project team and wider Digital Education portfolio have recently collaborated to build an exemplar examination that showcases rich media in practice – Steve Carruthers from the Learning Design Team and Sebastian Hesselmans-Dirven from the Exams and eAssessment Team have joined forces to talk you through it in the video below. Sebastian, alongside Kylie Day, will also be presenting on next-level assessment design in digital environments later this month at the ATEM Exams Network Conference, reinforcing UNE’s position as a leader in online examinations.
