Overview

Learning analytics can often get stuck trying to define a series of questions that educators want to ask of data sitting in warehouses. What if we shifted to asking what are the problems that we wish to solve or the people who we wish to help? Building relationships and re-engaging students are ever so critical as higher education emerges from the pandemic – but what does engagement look like, how do we bring humanity to our use of data, and do we even have the right data in the first place? In this session, we will briefly explore the University of Sydney’s approach to fostering relationships and engagement through learning analytics. We will look at Sydney’s challenges and what engagement means and focus on vignettes around the use of data to personalise learning, provide tailored student support and feedback, and build human connection even when online.
