How has the Adoption of Undercover Production Techniques Affected the Australian Fresh Tomato Value Chain?
Dante Romeo – Undergraduate student, School of Agriculture and Food, University of Melbourne.
Abstract
Australian undercover production of fresh tomatoes has increased substantially since data was first recorded by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2005/06. This increase has been most marked in Victoria and South Australia where adoption of undercover production techniques has been highest. These techniques have enabled and been enabled by factors such as vertical integration of the value chain and changes in consumer demand. This paper investigates these factors to draw conclusions around how and why the value chain has changed. Changes in the volume and value of fresh tomato production are also discussed.
Keywords: tomatoes, Australia, undercover production, value chain, consumer preferences.
