All students: it’s not all doom and gloom; what to do if things go wrong after census date

Published On April 1, 2019 | By Amy | Deadlines, News

As you are probably aware, census date (25 March) – the last day to withdraw from Trimester 1 units without having to pay for them – has passed.

If you have missed census and things go wrong, there are a number of important things you should know:

  1. If you have fallen behind with your studies, or are struggling for some other reason, get in touch with your unit coordinator. Your unit coordinator is best placed to give you advice on how to get back on track with your unit and discuss possible extensions etc.
  2. If you have to withdraw from a trimester unit (or units) for circumstances that are both unforeseen and outside of your control, you can apply for a remission of fees. If you are successful, you will not have to pay for the unit that you have withdrawn from. A remission of fees will only be granted if you have exhausted other possibilities, so make sure you get in touch with your unit coordinator or the Student Support Team before you go down this path. You can find information on how to apply for a remission, and the online application form itself, at
  3. If you need to apply for a remission, you can get help from our Advocacy and Welfare team at It’s a really good idea to get in touch for advice before you start. You have a year from the date you withdraw from the unit to submit your application, so make sure you sort out all the important stuff first and get back to it when you are ready!
  4. If you withdraw from your trimester 1 unit/s before 6 May, you will not fail it/themIt will not affect your GPA either. The worst that can happen at this stage is that you incur the fee.
  5. 25 March was the census date for trimester 1 only. Census date for trimester 2 units is 29 July.
