Thirty new Fellows have been elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities, including UNE’s own Professor Martin Gibbs. The Academy is the country’s peak body in championing and inspiring excellence in humanities education and research, and election to Fellow is one of the highest honours in Australia.

“It is a great honour to be recognised by my senior colleagues in the Humanities,” said Gibbs.

“I think that what has made me happiest is that I have only ever had a normal ’40-40-20′ academic profile with a full teaching and admin load and no period of being research-focussed, so it feels like the recognition embraces the sort of career that most of us have experienced.”

While the humanities is under attack from changing technology and under appreciation of its role in shaping critical thinkers, the Australian Academy of the Humanities promotes excellence in scholarship and works to ensure the humanities remain central to Australia’s cultural, social and economic wellbeing.
