The Academic Board hosted a workshop in July with a mix of UNE’s senior leaders and members of academic staff on Artificial Intelligence at UNE.

This was a preliminary forum to surface issues to inform policy development and governance for AI at UNE.

It is the start of bigger conversations across the university.

We covered teaching, learning and assessment, research and governance, and AI in university processes. Central to our discussions was students. We need to equip our students to be able to engage in a world where AI will be central to knowledge industries. And we need them to be able to use it productively and with responsibility (whatever the latter will mean in the new world).

We also acknowledged dissident voices and alternate views on AI. It’s clear that there are concerns about the arrival of AI and I hope that this recent event will help to start the process of hearing and considering a range of views.

We heard from UNE academics and professional staff on an enormous range of topic areas, and all the presentations and slides can be viewed at the links below:

Building on this workshop, the intention is to have a series of open forums at which a range of issues concerning the place and role of AI in the University in the near future and longer-term.
