From working-class beginnings amid the coal mines of Newcastle, John Waters forged a rewarding life – and amassed five tertiary degrees, including one from UNE. But he never forgot his humble origins and good fortune.
Giving regularly to UNE scholarships and making a gift to UNE in his will was John’s way of leaving a small legacy. “Dad believed in the power of education to create opportunities and wanted to help others,” said his daughter Lesley. “And he loved a graduation ceremony.”
You can read the full story (p18) and many others about the transformative power of a UNE education in our 2025 Giving Report, which is inspiring generous donations to our annual appeal. Donations that will open doors and change lives for generations.
As the end-of-financial-year approaches, we continue to invite our community to share in this critical investment – in future students and in the future of our university. We’ve always dreamed big at UNE and every tax-deductible donation can help make a world of difference.
