A cross-unit action group has been working to better understand student enrolment patterns following the Term 1 2025 census, with a focus on improving student retention and success.

Co-led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Evans and Chief Operating Officer, Professor Meredith Parry, the Rapid Action Group (RAG) brought together academic leaders and professionals from Marketing, Student Journey, and Atrium for twice-weekly 30-minute standups.

This collaborative approach has generated valuable insights that will shape both immediate and long-term strategies.

Key findings and actions include:

  • Smarter marketing timing: Analysis showed that late-cycle marketing efforts have limited effectiveness, as late-enrolling students are less likely to continue past census. We’ll be adjusting our marketing timeline and admissions processing resources accordingly.
  • Enhanced financial support: We’ve identified opportunities to better align scholarship and bursary programs, with increased HEPPP bursary funding planned for Term 2 to help students manage cost-of-living pressures.
  • Program requirement improvements: Early awareness of program requirements and costs is crucial for student success. We’re exploring program redesigns that give students more time to meet requirements like health placement vaccinations.
  • Data-driven student support: The team highlighted Atrium’s vital role in identifying and re-engaging at-risk students. Work is underway to integrate Atrium data with Business Intelligence systems for more comprehensive student support insights.

The collaborative approach has not only yielded practical solutions but also strengthened cross-portfolio relationships and information sharing, creating a foundation for more effective, evidence-based decision-making across the university.
