The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) is an organisation that helps universities and researchers in Australia manage and use research data effectively. As a member of ARDC, UNE gains access to several valuable services:
- Nectar Research Cloud: This is a platform that provides computing resources, allowing researchers to perform data analysis and run complex simulations without needing their own powerful computers. UNE researchers can access Nectar through a paid Time plan with Intersect or through national merit allocation (subject to eligibility criteria).
- Research Data Australia: An online portal where researchers can find and share data from various Australian research organisations, making collaboration easier and promoting the reuse of existing data. You can find data for research here.
- Research Vocabularies Australia: This service offers standardised terms and definitions, helping researchers ensure their data is consistent and can be easily understood by others.
- Identifier Services: ARDC provides unique identifiers for research data, ensuring that datasets can be reliably cited and accessed over time.
Additionally, ARDC focuses on developing Thematic Research Data Commons, which are specialised areas of digital infrastructure tailored to specific research domains. These themes include:
- People Research Data Commons: focusing on health research and research translation
- Planet Research Data Commons: providing infrastructure for earth and environmental science research, and decision-making
- HASS and Indigenous Research Data Commons: supporting Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Indigenous research data communities.
By leveraging these services, UNE (a member of ARDC) can strengthen its research capabilities, foster collaboration among researchers, and ensure that valuable data is effectively managed and shared for the benefit of the broader research community.
The ARDC membership allows researchers to participate in and influence national research data practices and policies, ensuring their needs are represented in Australia’s research data ecosystem. It is significant as it provides us with a seat on the table, allowing us to influence decisions, gain recognition, and contribute to strategic decision making.
