Across four inspiring nights, the “Creative Conversations” series brings UNE students, alumni, and members of the wider community up close and personal with some of Australia’s most successful creative practitioners. Bring your questions and curiosity for a week-long celebration of creativity, insight, and inspiration.

Tuesday 15 October: Ange Betzien

Ange Betzien is a multi-award winning playwright and screenwriter, with a career spanning three decades. Their work as a playwright includes “Chalkface” (STC 2022), “Egg” (MTC 2017), “Mortido” (STC 2015), “The Dark Room” (Belvoir 2011), “The Teenage Alchemist” (ATYP 2009), “Hoods” (Sydney Opera House 2006), and “Children of the Black Skirt” (RealTV 2003). In recent years Ange has also found great success as a screenwriter, including for “Total Control” (ABC TV, 2019-), “Apple Cider Vinegar” (Netflix, 2024), and “Secret City” (Foxtel, 2016), and is lead writer on four series in development.

Wednesday 16 October: Heather Mitchell

Heather Mitchell AM is one of Australia’s most acclaimed actors. Her numerous film and television credits include “Wakefield”, “The Unusual Suspects”, “Operation Buffalo”, “Rake”, “A Place to Call Home”, “Palm Beach”, “The Great Gatsby”, and “Rogue”. Recent theatre appearances have included “Strictly Ballroom the Musical”, “The Harp in The South” and “Still Point Turning: The Catherine McGregor Story”. She was awarded an Order of Australia at the 2019 Australia Day honours.

Thursday 17 October: Véronique Serret

Véronique Serret is a violinist, vocalist and composer who bridges the divide between classical and contemporary art forms. One of Australia’s most versatile musicians, Véronique has worked extensively with Bangarra Dance Theatre, Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Sydney Dance Company, and as concertmaster of the Darwin Symphony. In demand as a leader, chamber musician, mentor and collaborative artist, Véronique is known for her inclusive soundworld, her musical flexibility and willingness to collaborate across genres as well as her work on the 6 string electric violin.

Friday 18 October: Fiona Kelly McGregor

Fiona Kelly McGregor is an award-winning multidisciplinary writer, artist and critic who has published eight books, including “Buried Not Dead” (2021); “A Novel Idea” (2019); “Indelible Ink” (2010); “Strange Museums” (2008); “Chemical Palace” (2002); and “Suck My Toes” (1994). She writes regularly for The Monthly, The Saturday Paper, Overland, Runway and Running Dog, and is known for her extensive repertoire of performance art. Her most recent novel, “Iris” (2022), was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin and NSW Premier’s Awards.
