Meet Karma Auden, UNE’s new Chief Financial Officer. She joins us from the University of Canberra, where she has spent the last seven years, firstly as Director of Finance and Business Services, and then as Chief Financial Officer.

What interested you in the role and coming to Armidale?
I’m a country girl at heart who loves numbers, so there was an attraction right from the beginning.  Having lived and worked in Canberra for the last 7 years I am also acclimatised to the challenges and opportunities facing higher ed at this juncture … as well as the temperature!  It was a natural progression.

What do you feel you bring to the role and what are your top priorities for the role?
Having spent the last 7 years working in another university, I already have a deep understanding of the sector, and what it means for the smaller institutions.  I also bring a curious mind and am keen to meet individuals and teams from across UNE to uncover the stories and activities behind the numbers, which is what financial reporting should be based on.

My top priorities would be:

  1. To get to know the people at UNE, and hear about what is impacting the current ways of working;
  2. To start joining the dots and understanding the connections across the different teams and activities; and
  3. I wouldn’t be a CFO if I didn’t also say I’m keen to look at the budget model to ensure that UNE is best placed to face the coming years in what is an interesting time for the sector.

How would you describe your management style?
I’m happy to chat to anyone, so inclusive and collaborative would have to be at the top of the list.  I also like to ensure that everyone understands how their work contributes to the greater objectives, as that creates a solid basis for success.

What are your favourite things to do away from the office?
Spending time with my horses, so I’m looking forward to them joining me in a couple of months’ time … just in time for some Spring riding.  We also have a camper trailer and love to get away with our two dogs for long weekends.  I’ve heard great reviews of the camping options along the coast, so that will also be on the ‘must-do’ list.  My husband and I have recently instigated ‘no-tech’ evenings and so board games have been making a comeback in the house … and I have a piano that has not been touched in years, although the intention is still there!  Maybe with a shorter commute now that will be a possibility. 🤞
