Generous supporters of UNE students gathered in historic Booloominbah for UNE’s annual scholarships luncheon last Friday.

Almost 100 special guests, donors and trustees, as well as on-campus scholarship recipients enjoyed the opportunity to meet and share stories – of why they are compelled to support UNE education and the profound difference such gifts can make.

Lily Bragg, who is in her third year completing a Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine, is a recipient of the Betty J Fyffe scholarship for rural students studying in the Joint Medical Program. She shared with the audience how the scholarship supports her in her studies.

“Particularly this year, the scholarship has given me access to accommodation and supported me whilst on placement, meaning I can travel and get experiences in different rural settings without the financial burden of needing to stay in Armidale to work in my part-time job. The experiences I have gained from being able to travel to different hospitals and GP practices have been invaluable, learning from many different professionals in the field and just getting to experience life in those communities for five weeks.”

UNE annually distributes some 300 donor-funded scholarships valued at $1.5 million. The primary aim is to ensure UNE education is affordable to those of limited means, to support First Nations students and to recognise students who have achieved academic excellence. Many of these scholarships are a result of long-standing industry partnerships and generous bequests from alumni who are invested in regional tertiary education.

New Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Moran, Chancellor James Harris and Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall were among the invited guests celebrating UNE’s scholarship program.

Thank you to the generous donors and their trust and foundation representatives who, each year, help give our students every chance of success. You, too, can contribute to UNE’s scholarship fund. For more information please telephone the UNE Advancement Office on 02 6773 2870.
