The UNE Library is pleased to announce the University’s participation in three new Read and Publish agreements starting January 2023:
- AIP Publishing
- Elsevier
- Taylor and Francis
In addition to the new Read and Publish agreements, these existing Read and Publish agreements will continue into 2023:
- Wiley (with the addition of Hindawi)

- Cambridge University Press
- Oxford University Press
- CSIRO
Journals included in the new agreements with Elsevier, AIP Publishing and Taylor and Francis are restricted to a selection of hybrid journals only. Further details about the new agreements and updates to existing agreements can be found on the Read and Publish webpage. There is also information about APC discounts for Elsevier and Taylor & Francis (for selected journals excluded from the Read and Publish Agreements), as well as The Royal Society of Chemistry.
Blanca Pizzani, Director Library Services said that “Participation in the agreements represents a substantial contribution to the university’s commitment to Open Access of university scholarship and research. UNE researchers published over 80 articles as Open Access under the five existing agreements in 2022. Many researchers have been able to take advantage of the agreements by publishing their work Open Access where they would not have otherwise had the funds to do so. Some researchers have even been able to publish multiple articles as Open Access under the agreements.”
Professor Chris Sharpley has published three articles under the Springer agreement in 2022. Professor Sharpley said about the publication process, “The submission and peer review process were just the same as before the agreements, and I was notified promptly upon article acceptance that my articles were eligible to be made Open Access under the Read and Publish agreement. It was exciting to receive that confirmation straight away, and know that my articles will have increased visibility and readership as compared to being published behind a paywall.”
Associate Professor Nicola Schutte has published two articles under the Springer and Wiley agreements in 2022. Asked about the significance and impact of UNE participating in the agreements, Associate Professor Schutte said: “I think Open Access is very important in the dissemination of information and promoting equitable global access to information. I’m excited about the university’s participation in the agreements because of the potential they offer in expanding knowledge and encouraging the use of information generated by UNE researchers, and others participating in the agreements. The information which is made freely available is of importance to many sectors, private and not-for-profit organisations, as well as individual community members who want to follow evidence-based findings and make decisions about various aspects of their lives, such as health, food choices, finances, or relationships.”
