Music is vital to setting the scene of a graduation ceremony. For UNE’s winter events, the task falls to singer-songwriter Hattie Oates, who says she’s very excited about being part of these momentous occasions.
“I can’t wait to sing the graduates into their next chapter and wish them all the best,” says Hattie, pictured. “For some, it’s been a long time coming.”
Having done part of her schooling at The Armidale School, Hattie’s no stranger to this university town. “Growing up doing gigs around the local circuit, with the occasional college event, was a highlight,” she says.
Now sharing her time between Tamworth and Sydney, Hattie is looking forward to returning for the three-day graduation weekend.
“In line with the Aussie theme of grad this year, I’ll be bringing out some of the greats with some Missy Higgins, Pete Murray and more,” she says.
She says she “absolutely” feels the pressure to nail her performances, because the ceremonies are such important events to the graduands.
“I get nervous for every performance, so this one is no exception. But with many familiar faces in the crowd, nerves will settle,” she says.
