The Deputy-Vice Chancellor (Research), Professor Heiko Daniel, is pleased to announce Dr Natalie Morgan as the winner of the 2020 award and formally commends Dr Christopher Goatley and the infection inflammation immunity group led by Prof Natkunam Ketheesan on their applications.
Dr Morgan has been working on a method for mimicking the chicken gut that will reduce the need for animal trials. This research has been published in peer-reviewed journals as well as presentations at international summits.
As part of UNE’s commitment to the ethics principles of the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes, the 3Rs award was launched this year to reward and promote the implementation, discovery or development of methodologies and/or technologies that enhance 3Rs principles.

- reductionof number of animals used and
- refinementof techniques to minimise the potential impact on animals
