Twenty-nine students considering a career in agriculture and science- based fields have participated in a unique two day camp on the 2ndand 3rdof July as part of the UNE GRASS scholarship program hosted by the University of New England.
This two-day camp introduced students from a range of backgrounds to life at a university, the exciting technological and scientific developments evolving in the agricultural fields and how they, as leaders of the next generation, can shape our global community through sustainable and innovative agricultural practices.
The all-expenses paid camp offers year 11 and 12 tertiary-bound students a direct insight into life at a university, hearing from varied course coordinators, current students and the chance to experience college life while staying at the St Albert’s college for a night.
The camp broadens students’ minds regarding future career pathways, which are constantly evolving within the industry. This is achieved through a series of sessions such as visiting the UNE SMART Farm and Costa Tomato exchange to learn about the latest developments in research and technology.
This year, the UNE GRASS scholarship program has been extended to 24 schools from across the state. Twenty-nine talented students have been chosen to take part in the camp, of home 15 will be offered the full scholarship, which includes a five-day industry placement working with a scientist in an area of their interest.
A “reporting back” session on the 11thof February 2019 will then conclude the program for this year.
