Join Gary White, Chief Planner for the NSW Department of Planning and Environment as he talks about strategic planning around regional universities.

The presentation will explore the global forces that are changing our world and how our cities, settlements, communities and universities are reshaping and repositioning in response to the challenges and opportunities of change. The NSW planning system is examined as a method to manage this change.

The presentation will take place in the Natural Resources Lecture Theatre EM1 (W055) on Monday 28 May at 12pm and is open to the public.

As Chief Planner for the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, Gary is responsible for overseeing projects that will deliver an easier and more efficient planning system as well as providing expert advice on projects that will help communities in the long term.

He has almost 40 years planning experience, and has held some of the most senior planning positions both in NSW and Queensland. This includes City Planner for Ipswich City Council, Deputy Director-General for Queensland’s Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and later as the Department’s first Government Planner, as well as roles within the private sector participating in all aspects of the National Planning Agenda.

In November 2017 the Planning Institute of Australia awarded Gary with the ‘NSW Planner of the Year’ acknowledging his outstanding achievements in planning.

“I’ve never doubted my enthusiasm for great planning. My favourite mythical theme aligned to my planning thinking is the phoenix, a creature which despite changes and challenges can keep reinventing itself,” Gary said.
