Research Impact: More than just a journal citation
Eleanor Colla
Research Services Librarian
In this session the University Library will discuss the growing requirements to show research impact, provide suggestions on how and where to find it, and ways of incorporating a narrative and evidence of impact into your grant applications and promotions.
This seminar presentation looks at the following:
- What can research impact be?
- Where to find research impact: journal and book (chapter) citations, collaboration with other researchers and industry, conferences, sitting on boards, research being used in government papers, research framework being implemented in research and/or industry, you/ your research being discussed in the public discourse (radio, TV, newspaper, podcasts, interviews), research being used by industry (textbooks, inventions (patents))
- How to use research impact: narratives, metrics, cite, keep evidence

The Education seminar today on research metrics by Eleanor Colla was very informative. I hope this session is repeated and promoted in the new HASS faculty, maybe even run it twice a year, especially for staff relatively new to UNE, early career researchers, and for all academics who need to keep up with research issues. This is a must for academics to learn the ‘tricks of the trade’ in building a research profile, and to stay updated with metrics and research issues. Thanks to the UNE library, and Eleanor for an excellent overview of databases and insights into preparing impact statements etc..
