The Armidale School (TAS) won the hugely popular annual Mathematics Day for high schools held at the University of New England last week.
The central schools competition was won by Holy Trinity from Inverell and St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour took out the team construction event.
Every year the event attracts more than 250 students from secondary schools across the region – some coming from as far away as Dubbo, Port Macquarie and Narrabri.
Schools enter either one or two teams consisting of four Year 8 students who participate in activities such as analysing number patterns and solving mathematical problems. Teams are not allowed to use calculators.
The teams also competed to see who could build the highest freestanding structure using only paper and tape. The structure had to remain standing for one minute.
The winners were presented with perpetual trophies and individual team members all receive a certificate of participation at the conclusion of the event.
The event was held in conjunction with The New England Mathematical Association, the SiMERR National Centre and the UNE School of Education.
