UNE students Joss McAlpin and Amber Aranzy were the only Australian athletes to win medals at the recent 28th Winter Universiade Games held in Almaty Kazakhstan. Australia sent a squad of seven athletes to compete in the Games – an international sporting and cultural festival held every two years in a different city.
Amber was elected flag bearer for Team Australia and won the first medal for the team when she took out second place in the Ladies Snowboarding Slopestyle event. Amber also came third in the Ladies Snowboard Cross and fourth in the Ladies Snowboarding Big Air event.
Joss came second in the Men’s Snowboarding Big Air event and fifth in the Men’s Snowboarding Slopestyle.
