Two-day course for academic and professional staff members, facilitated by Uniting Institute of Education (UIE)

Accidental Counsellor is a popular two-day workshop that equips people who have no counselling experience with practical skills to face issues that can arise when helping others in both their personal and professional life.

This workshop examines the high level communication skills of a counsellor and how these are used to clarify a problem and reflect on personal approaches to challenging people and situations.

It also identifies how to set boundaries when working with an issue and learning the kinds of roles people play in these types of situations.

Learning objectives:

  • Get a brief introduction to counselling theory and its practical uses
  • Learn how to identify a problem
  • Explore how to respond to difficult situations and/or strong emotions
  • Discover roles that people play in difficult situations
  • Develop core skills and strategies to promote change
  • Explore how to deal with particular personalities or scenarios
  • Learn when and how to refer
  • Identify how to maintain personal and professional boundaries
