About this course:  Approved/accredited by SafeWork NSW (formally Workcover)

 This five-day practical, skills-oriented course is designed to provide work health and safety representatives and supervisors with the necessary skills and knowledge to complement their roles in the workplace.

The course shows you how to deal with the requirements under the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2011and gives you the skills with which to carry out your representative role.

The course also shows you how to communicate effectively and resolve conflict in the workplace with regard to health and safety issues.

Should I attend?

Anyone wanting to perform the role of a Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Representative in an organization are required to complete this five day training program if they wish to carry out all the powers and functions of a Health and Safety Representative (HSR)

What will be specifically covered in this accredited course?

  • Evolution of Work Health and Safety and the WHS legislative framework
  • Terminology, objectives and implications for consultation
  • Key parties with WHS legislative duties and functions
  • Role and function of WorkCover and offences and penalties under the WHS Act
  • Consultation, representation and participation arrangements under the WHS Act
  • Election and role of HSRs and deputy HSRs in the workplace
  • Obligations of a PCBU to HSRs and protections for HSRs from discrimination
  • Other consultation mechanisms including health and safety committees (HSCs)
  • Strategies and skills for HSRs to support effective consultation
  • Representing workers as a HSR – negotiation and issues resolution
  • Monitoring PCBUs’ management of work health and safety risks
  • Workplace inspection and recording findings – including practical exercise
  • Obligation in relation to ‘notifiable incidents’ and resources available to assist HSRs
  • Issuing a Provisional Improvement notice (PIN) IN
  • Direction to cease unsafe work 328

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Perform the role of a Health and Safety Representative
  • Provide motivation to promote a safe workplace
  • Understand the national safety framework and relevant legislation
  • Identify recent changes under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011
  • Understand the elements of  a comprehensive safety management system
  • Identify relevant workplace health and safety situations and interrelate with colleagues and other staff.
