The Northern University Games (NUG) will be played at Toowoomba from July 5-9 and the University of New England (UNE) will be sending over 125 students to compete in a variety of sports.

Ariane Mazzei, UNE Team Manager said, “We have a very enthusiastic team of students who will be participating in traditional sports, men’s, women’s and mixed teams for Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, Touch Football, but also in the more unusual ones like Futsal, European handball and Tenpin Bowling.”

Ms Mazzei believes it’s great that the students have an opportunity to try out different sports. “One of our Team Captains, Carlin Brunner-Evans is a member of the UNE European Handball Team and these games will be his first ever competition in this sport!”

Carlin who is in his final year at UNE studying a bachelor of Law and bachelor of Arts degree is an old hat at University Games having attended five Australian University Games and two Northern University Games.

“This is the first year European Handball has been offered, so hopefully the competition is not too tough. I’ve always played waterpolo but this year I’ve decided to give something else a go and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Co-Captain, Kate Loneragan from Robb College, is President of the UNE Netball Club and has been part of the NUG team for the past three years.

Kate loves playing sport and that’s why she enjoys the university games. “I love that I get to play sport all week and meet new people from other universities, as well as students from UNE who are in different colleges or in town, who I haven’t met before.”

“I also love that we take a really good team and compete against our city counterparts and do well. It is very satisfying to beat some of the larger universities!”

Both students believe that the university games are becoming more popular because they are being more widely publicised, with many first year students joining them in the quest for a medal.
