You are invited to be involved in the English Language Centre guest lecture program for April 16-June 4 2015. This invitation is extended to all lecturers and post-graduate students as well as UNE staff and members of the broader community.
For those of you who have not been involved with this program in the past, this is a chance for English Language students to practice listening techniques, take notes, and ask questions in preparation for their entry into UNE. It is also an opportunity for you to make the students aware of you, your faculty and subject area, or simply to meet them in an informal environment. Your lecture could be about something you know very well, your subject area and how you got interested in it, or a hobby or skill even your work colleagues don’t know you have. Alternatively, you may wish to practice a presentation that you intend to give in the future.
International students often report that having the opportunity to listen to a variety of lecturers before they started their program was of great benefit to them. Not only did they get to hear different accents, but they also experienced the different lecturing styles of those who participated in previous terms.
This coming term it is anticipated that the lecture group will comprise students with a country mix that includes China, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Thailand, Nepal, India and Korea. Numbers and countries represented are not yet finalised, so there may, of course, be more. These students will be entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies in a wide range of areas, including Agriculture, Accounting, Business, Computer Science and Nursing, with other possible fields being represented if these numbers grow.
The term’s lectures are timetabled to take place on Thursdays, from 2pm to 3pm, with the following dates available: April 16th and 23rd, May 7th, 14th , 21st and 28th and June 4th . You will be advised about the lecture venue when your place is confirmed, should you opt to participate in the program.
Lectures would, ideally, be about 35 – 45 minutes long with 15 minutes’ question and answer time, and contain a minimal number of PowerPoint slides so students can practice their listening and note-taking skills. The organisers can provide any support you need, so all you have to bring is your PowerPoint or similar material on a USB.
The English Language Centre can’t offer you anything except sincere thanks, and the good feeling you may get from helping these students adjust to university life in their new country.
If you are interested, contact Jennifer Hume on jhume2@une.edu.au or phone 6773 3353. Please nominate one or more of the dates shown above which may be suitable to you.
