In 2014 the School of Arts is celebrating the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth and is excited to announce John Bell’s visit and lecture.

John Bell is one of the nation’s most illustrious theatre personalities. Award-winning actor, acclaimed director, risk-taking impresario and torch-bearing educationalist, Bell has been a key figure in shaping the nation’s theatrical identiy over the past 50 years. He is the founding director of the Shakespeare company which bears his name, and has introduced generations of school children to the joy of Shakespeare’s theatre in performance.

Bell’s unique contribution to national culture has been recognised by many bodies. He is an Officer of the order of Australia and teh Order of the British Empire. He holds Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Sydney, NSW and Newcastle, and was recognised by the National Trust of Australia in 1997 as one of Australia’s Living Treasures.

As an actor and director, Bell’s many awards include a Helpmann Award for Best Actor (Richard 3, 2002), a Producers and Directors Guild Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the JC Williamson Award (2009) for extraordinary contribution to Australia’s live entertainment industry.
