Time’s ticking. T1 is just around the corner!! Still dwelling on which Law elective unit to pick? Are you interested in practising in the areas of Criminal Law, Care and Protection Law, parenting matters in Family Law, or Adoption and Immigration Law? If that’s a YES, then LAW359/LLM595 Children’s Law (See Unit Notes) is the perfect complementary unit!

Why is broadening your legal knowledge in Children’s Law advantageous? The short answer is, Children’s Law expands across an array of legal disciplines. This area of law is both exciting and challenging as it is rapidly evolving as societal values continue to change. You may have heard of vague terms such as “best interests of the child” or the “rights of the child” but never fully understood what it means. Don’t worry, LAW359/LLM595 will introduce you to all of that!

Students studying LAW359/LLM595 Children’s Law will cover topics like international conventions relating to children, access to justice, indigenous perspectives and issues, youth justice, child protection, child asylum and refugee issues – just to name a few.

Not only is Children’s Law an intriguing unit to undertake, but there is also no supervised exams or prescribed textbooks to buy (win-win)!!!

You will be in the good hands of Karen Conte, who will lead you through your LAW359/LLM595 journey. Karen is a practising barrister and academic. Prior to this, she worked with children as both a primary school teacher and principal! Thinking of practising? Karen says it’s a rewarding area where skilled lawyers are needed and essential.

If you’re still reading, that’s a good sign! If you need a smidge extra convincing… check out this video by the UNE Law School for an insightful overview of the unit you’re about to enrol in!
