Jane Gudde is a PhD student with #UNELaw’s AgLaw Centre. She was recently selected by ABC New England Northwest to be interviewed on the Breakfast show – congratulations Jane!!

Jane was selected because of her RRR topical presentation at the recent UNE Postgraduate Conference.

Jane’s PhD is: “Assessing Australian agricultural sustainability assurance schemes for legitimacy and effectiveness”. Sustainability assurance schemes are ‘private governance systems that make use of markets to promote environmentally and socially beneficial practices.’ The one most people would have heard of is organic certification. But there are also many others that cover, e.g. cotton, wine and sugar.

If these schemes are not managed and governed in a transparent manner for stakeholders and the wider community then there is a risk that they will not be seen as legitimate.

Jane’s PhD analyses the legitimacy of these schemes. Her aim is to ‘enhance acceptance and awareness of sustainability assurance by producers, consumers and retailers.’

All Postgraduate Conference presentations were recorded and will be released soon.
