Lisa was really concerned leading up to her moot appearance. She wasn’t sure if she was pursuing the correct arguments and, as English is not her first language, she was worried the judge would not be able to understand her accent.
When it came to the day of her moot, Lisa did find the experience confronting and challenging and sometimes her mind went blank. Luckily, Paul Akon, who was judging the moot, explained the procedures of the court slowly and comprehensively. He also made sure the atmosphere was calm and friendly, which helped allay some of Lisa’s nerves.
Notwithstanding the challenging nature of the moot court, Lisa did an extremely good job. She actually enjoyed the experience and is contemplating entering into the advocacy world after she graduates!

Lisa decided to study law through UNE when she was working as a migration agent in Sydney. Her interest in human rights was piqued when she met refugees and asylum seekers whilst working in this role. Lisa found she could really identify with her clients, so was motivated to become a lawyer and help people seek asylum in Australia. There was also a personal motivation, as Lisa and her parents migrated from Korea to Australia when she was 16. Lisa is very concerned about the current problems in North Korea and she hopes to join a human rights organisation so she can support North Korean refugees.

Before studying law, Lisa completed an undergraduate degree in computer science. Whilst completing her initial degree, Lisa was not required to write any essays. Luckily, once starting her law degree, Lisa was able to access the support she needed to successfully complete her degree. In terms of being an online student, Lisa enjoyed being able to listen to the podcasts/lectures more than once if she needed to.
Lisa enjoyed all her law units and the way they were structured. She especially relished Alternative Dispute Resolution with Paul Akon and Equity and Trusts with Paul Sattler.
Upon completing her law degree, Lisa is excited about helping others who are not as fortunate as those of us who live in Australia!
