Have you ever considered Copyright compliance to be a fun and engaging topic?

Earlier in the year, the Learning Media team met with the University’s copyright officer to discuss privacy concerns for offline video. We were expecting a technical discussion full of rules and regulations, one that would generate a sizeable amount of documentation and require inherent changes to our video platform. Instead, something surprising happened… We found that much of the necessary work was already in motion, so only a minimal amount of effort was required to keep our video platform compliant for delivering offline video… Win! You can see the outcome of the project where we worked with both the copyright and privacy office to create a new privacy statement here.

That left us with about 45 minutes, which quickly turned into an interesting conversation about how we could help communicate copyright compliance for Academics surrounding AV materials in a fun and colourful way.

At first, this challenge sounded difficult. Then we got to work and realised… it was, in fact, very difficult!

With a stack of copyright notes in hand, we began pulling ideas together. We quickly concluded that an animation, broken down into smaller bite-sized topics, would be the perfect medium for delivery. Choosing a vibrant colour palette, crafting a story through tactical scriptwriting, and weaving in personality and humour took a lot more thought.

One draft led to another, ideas turned into storyboards, and slowly the world of legislation began to transform into something bright and playful. By the end, we weren’t just explaining copyright, we were having fun with it.

And this is the result…

We hope you find this animation both enjoyable and useful for learning a thing or two about copyright compliance for AV materials.

Keep an eye on this space as we publish the animation in MyLearn and look forward to working with the copyright office to create more animations in the future.
