As we continue to enhance the learning experience for all UNE students, we’re introducing a new privacy statement for recorded tutorials and learning activities. This update is designed to ensure transparency, protect student privacy, and support equitable access to learning resources, especially for those studying remotely or with limited internet connectivity.

Why the Change?

Recent feedback highlighted two important issues:

  • Student Privacy: Students weren’t always aware that their participation in tutorials, whether via video, audio, or chat, could be included in recordings used as learning resources. This raised concerns about the capture of personal information, such as names and video images, without explicit consent.
  • Equitable Access: Many students rely on the ability to download and view content offline, particularly in low-bandwidth environments. We must balance this need with our obligations around copyright and privacy.

What’s New?

  • A Clear Privacy Statement: Working with the University’s Privacy Officer, we’ve developed a statement that explains:
    • What personal information may be captured in recordings
    • How these recordings may be used within a unit
    • How students can protect their privacy, including options to opt out of being recorded
  • Where to Find It: From Trimester 3, this statement will appear in units under “Unit Information & Resources,” with a dedicated “Privacy” subheading.

What Does This Mean for You?

  • Transparency: Students will be better informed about how their data is used, reducing the risk of misunderstandings or complaints.
  • Best Practice: Including the privacy statement is now a standard part of unit setup. Please familiarise yourself with its content and direct students to it as needed.
  • Equity and Compliance: Our approach ensures we meet copyright obligations while supporting all students, no matter where or how they study.
