No doubt many of you are busily marking to meet the tight T3 results submission deadlines.
Please take note of the important information below relating to the correct use of Special Assessment grade codes, and the various ‘fail’ grade codes as well as some information on the importance of including a mark (%)
Special Assessment
How do I know which of my students have special assessments?
Your School admin colleagues have access to the full list of student applications for special assessment, and the outcomes. All unit coordinators also have access to this information via Atrium.
Which grade should be used for the various Special Assessment outcomes?
SET | Special Extension of Time on an Assignment ……(not to be used for deferred exams) |
SPS | Deferred (Special) Exam to be arranged by the School at any suitable time |
SPE | Deferred (Special) Exam to be centrally managed, held via OLX platform at any suitable time* |
RU
(Result Unavailable) |
This grade is not appropriate for this purpose, do not use it to signify special assessment has been approved
RU should only be used where the mark/grade cannot be released due to other reasons (has not yet been marked or is still the subject of investigation, moderation etc) |
*SPE exams can be held at any time you wish but we require 3-4 weeks’ notice – unless we are advised otherwise, they will default to the next peak exam period at the end of the following trimester.
- Exams periods are now ‘compressed’ and held within one week instead of two. You can reduce the number of students with multiple exams during the compressed exam period by holding deferred and supplementary exams before the next peak exam period.
- Email olxforstaff@une.edu.au with the details if you would like to hold your deferred exam/s before the next peak exam period.
The Special Assessment grades SET, SPS, and SPE have significance throughout our various systems.
They will:
- keep a student’s MyLearn access open to allow them to complete the work,
- remove them from ‘show cause’ type progression processes
- include them in the next exam timetable dataset if required (SPE only).
- The RU (Result Unavailable) grade is not appropriate in this context and should not be used. Please do not use the RU grade for these circumstances.
Fail grades – which one should be used?
UNE has three fail grades in use, to be applied in the following circumstances:
N (Fail) | all required assessments have been submitted, and the overall mark is 49% or less |
NI (Fail Incomplete) | fail outcome has occurred due to non-completion of a required assessment item
Note – the overall mark can be higher than 49% |
NC (Compulsory Fail) | fail outcome occurred due to having completed but failed an assessment item that MUST BE PASSED to pass the unit
Note- overall mark can be higher than 49% |
NOTE – an accurate mark (%) should still be recorded and submitted.
Submitting 0% as the mark when that is inaccurate will disadvantage the student with future WAM (Weighted Average Mark) calculations.
Be sure to submit the actual mark % for every relevant grade. (SR or US Grade Codes do not require a mark )
As always, please do not hesitate to contact us via results@une.edu.au should you require any further information, clarification, or assistance.
