The Marking Helper block is a useful tool for all Unit Coordinators & their markers to be aware of, and has just received a tidy myLearn update!

Marking Helper can be found at the top right of the block drawer in all assignment submission spaces within myLearn, and provides a handy calculator for quickly and consistently calculating the adjusted mark of students who submit late assignments within your unit, as well as some quick links to common queries for Unit Coordinators. It will appear to staff on the assignment description page and the grading table page, but will remain invisible to your students.

Using the Late Penalty Calculator

UNE’s Assessment Policy (https://policies.une.edu.au/document/view-current.php?id=290), clause 20, outlines the following expectation for academic staff across our various Faculties, when grading student work submitted after the due date and time without an approved extension to incur a late submission penalty:

  • A deduction of 5% of the total marks for the assessment task for each calendar day or part day after the due date will be applied.
  • An assessment task received more than ten (10) calendar days after the due date without an approved extension will receive 0% for the task.
  • Where a task is mandatory to submit in order to complete a unit, a task received more than ten (10) calendar days after the due date but within the relevant teaching period will be deemed as having been submitted.
  • The Unit Coordinator will inform affected students when late submission penalties are applied upon completion of marking.

The Late Submission Penalty Calculator, found within this Marking Helper block, provides boxes to enter the score a student would have received, the total of the task, and how many days late. On adding this information, an adjusted score in line with the above policy will be displayed, which staff can then enter for students, informing them of this scaled mark and reason.

Detailed advise on the calculators use, and how & where to apply this adjusted score can be located in the “Calculate and apply a late penalty” chapter of the newly updated Assignment support section of Teaching Online
