Analysis of the Dong Ding Oolong Tea Value Chain in Taiwan

Ting-Yu Lin – Postgraduate Student, Master of Global Food and Agricultural Business, University of Adelaide

Abstract

Dong Ding Oolong Tea is one of the most important local industries in the Lugu Region of Taiwan. It had been the most iconic of the Taiwan specialty teas until the ‘high-mountain’ tea replaced its status. A SWOT analysis of the value chain of Dong Ding Oolong Tea is made to evaluate its performance. The main constraints are discovered to be the small scale of tea production, and the yet-to-be-decided balance between responsiveness and differentiation. Despite the small scale of production there are very good information flows between producers and the producer organisations, but the information flow to the downstream actors is quite fragmented. Solutions for overcoming the constraints are suggested.

Key words: Dong Ding Oolong Tea, value chain, Taiwan specialty tea
