The Impacts of the Introduction of Xylella Fastidiosa on the Australian Wine Industry Value Chain
Selby Borg-Mcilroy – Undergraduate student, University of Melbourne
Abstract
Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterial pathogen, and the cause of Pierce’s Disease in grapevines. This disease blocks the vines’ xylem, restricting the flow of water in the plant, resulting in the death or reduced productivity of grape vines, decreasing yield. The pathogen is not currently found in Australia. Drawing on a review of existing scientific and industry literature, in this paper the consequences if Xylella were to be introduced into Australia are examined, and the potential effects on Australia’s wine value chain are described
