Abstract
Cherries are an important horticultural export for Australia, valued at over $262 million per annum. In this paper, the value chain of Australian premium cherries is analysed to assess its performance, focusing on exports to the Chinese market, where there is a strong demand for high-quality fruit. Porter’s value chain model is applied to examine how Australian cherry exporters can develop their export activities and strengthen their position in China. The main constraints on the chain’s performance include climate change, logistical challenges, unstable trade relations and limited brand awareness in the Chinese market. To address these constraints, it is suggested that the industry investigate implementing advanced traceability systems, establishing flexible transportation arrangements, and developing targeted marketing campaigns to enhance consumer awareness and purchasing intentions. These strategies are expected to strengthen Australia’s competitiveness, improve supply reliability, and support sustainable growth in cherry exports to the Chinese market.
