Abstract
In this study the rice value chain in Dien Bien Province, Vietnam, was examined using the Food and Agriculture Organization’s sustainable food value chain framework. As well, a value chain analysis and a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis were conducted. The condition of the Dien Bien rice value chain was assessed, evaluating its advantages, disadvantages, potential for growth, and potential risks. Suggested approaches to increase its sustainability, competitiveness, and cultural importance included the conservation of traditional rice processing methods, the establishment of rigorous quality criteria and labelling frameworks, promotion of sustainable agricultural methods, cultivation of cooperation among stakeholders, targeting of niche markets, implementation of certification and labelling protocols, and encouragement of contract farming and public-private collaborations. These efforts were expected to improve the Dien Bien rice value chain.
