Professor Alison Sheridan

A long term attendee of ANZAM, this year in Auckland Professor Alison Sheridan co-chaired a professional development workshop with Professor Leisa Sargent from UNSW on ‘Energising senior faculty:  Keeping a spring in your step between your last promotion and retirement’.  With esteemed panellists, Professor Judith Pringle (AUT), Emeritus Professor Kerr Inkson (University of Auckland)  and Professor Neal Ashkanasy (UQ) leading off by reflecting on their own experiences, it was clear each career had its own rhythm, with the panellists’ fascinating stories of the latter stages of their careers shedding different lights on the way each has retained the spring in their step at work (besides the obvious option of a hip replacement).  Complementing their reflections, the second stage of the workshop included Professor Kate Kearins (Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of Business, Economics & Law) and  Professor Leisa Sargent (Senior Deputy Dean,  UNSW Business School) sharing their insights from the ‘management’ side, as well as their understanding of the research in the field.  The various takes on the ‘r’ word, from those navigating  it themselves, to those recognising the importance of this stage to those reporting to them, provided a rich environment in which to open the wider conversation around latter stage careers in academia.

In the Entrepreneurship, Start-Ups and Small Business stream, Alison delivered a paper, ‘Gender matters:  unleashing the potential of professional agribusiness services’, co-authored with Dr Lucie Newsome.  The paper examines the professional agricultural services sector through a gender lens, asking how the ideal agriculture service professional is likely to be socially constructed and identifying the likely enablers and barriers that exist to women’s participation in the growing number of SMEs in the agribusiness services sector.  Australia’s capacity to ensure sufficient food and fibre production should not be stymied by our failure to enable all participants to flourish in their work environments.

Dr Theresa Smith-Ruig

Theresa has joined the ANZAM Board as one of two NSW representatives on the Board and attended the board meeting in Auckland – she looks forward to sharing more after the next borad meeting.

Valerie Dalton

Valerie Dalton was delighted to run into a colleague who she first met at the PRME conference in Rio de Janeiro back in 2012. Oliver Laasch was one of the founders of Centre for Responsible Management Education and is a key contributor to PRME. The original connection led to Josie Fisher and Bligh Grant making contributions to a textbook titled Principles of Responsible Management: Global Sustainability, Responsibility, and Ethics that Oliver wrote with Roger Conaway and published in 2015. He is currently working on the second edition and Valerie is considering adopting it as the text for MM200 Managing People and Organisations.
