Studenting: the activity or experience of being a student

Hi everyone,

My name is Meg and I work with the Student Support Team while also being a student here at UNE. Over the years, and I mean YEARS, I have learnt a heap of really useful study tips and tricks for both on-campus and online study. I studied my first degree with UNE completely online while I lived in Perth but decided I wasn’t cold enough so made the move to Armidale to commence the next stage of my studies as an on-campus student. I have had some major ups and downs on my study journey and have made a list of all the things that helped me the most. Through this new weekly segment, I am going to share the top things that made my studenting life just a little bit easier.

Tip #1: Speeding Up Lectures

The ability to speed up lectures and take control of my own learning experience is something that I wish I had figured out at the beginning of my degree. Instead, I figured it out while completing my final unit when I had approximately 2 lectures left to listen to so I thought I better come back to study another degree to fully utilise this newfound trick.

The first thing you will need to do is download your lecture from Moodle. You can do this by opening your lecture in Echo360 and clicking the green play button on the far right hand side of your screen and selecting the option to download. If you are stuck at this step, you might find it useful to click here.

The next step will depend on which program you use to listen to your lectures but you will find that most programs look fairly similar. I like to use VLC Media Player while listening to my lectures. Once you open your lecture, you can then select: Playback -> Speed -> The choice is yours!

There you have it – I have given you the gift of time! You can expect to hear from me every Tuesday with a brand new top tip. If there’s anything in particular you would like me to write about, please pop your ideas in the comments below. If you are having any issues speeding up your lectures, you can contact our IT department on (02) 6773 5000 for assistance.

Happy studenting 🙂

Note: Controlling the speed of your lectures works both ways, if you feel like your lecture just isn’t long enough, feel free to slow it down and you can have lectures for days!
