Driving change in the bush: Using behavioural science to facilitate adoption of new management practices

Lynette McLeod, University of New England

Rural landholders are often encouraged to make changes to their management practices to improve economic, environmental and / or social outcomes. To the frustration of engagement specialists and policy makers, scientific knowledge, technological advancements, and legal and institutional instruments are often insufficient to overcome a landholder’s capacity and motivation to act. During the past seven years, Don Hine and I have worked with a range of industry groups and practitioners, such as the Centre of Invasive Species Solutions, NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Cotton Research and Development Corporation, to demonstrate how the behavioural science literature can assist in understanding their audiences’ decision-making processes and behaviour choices. I will present a practical framework, grounded in the behavioural science literature, which we have developed to assist engagement specialists conceptualise the behaviour change process, and improve the effectiveness of their intervention designs. Examples of this framework’s implementation will be drawn from a number of our research projects including invasive animal control, weed management and chemical spray application.

All welcome
