Dr M. Ethteshamul Bari, or Tanim for short, was literally born into academia. His father was a renowned law professor with expertise in the areas of constitutional law and human rights law. Witnessing this passion strongly influenced Tanim to develop a keen interest in these areas.
Tanim’s academic journey began with two degrees- a Diploma in Law and an LLB (Hons) – from the University of London and an LLB (1st Class Honours) from the University of Dhaka. Here he was awarded a prestigious gold medal for securing the highest marks in the Constitutional Law unit. This accolade inspired Tanim to undertake further studies in the area.
He successfully completed an LLM by dissertation with Distinction in 2011 at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. These achievements stimulated him further to continue developing his interest in constitutional law. Inspired by the ‘Gold Medal’ for securing the highest marks in constitutional law and ‘Distinction’ for his LLM, Tanim began his doctoral research on 20 July 2011 at Macquarie Law School, in the areas of constitutional law and human rights law, as a recipient of an International Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship. Tanim completed his PhD in 2015 and went on to teach Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence at Macquarie University first as a Tutor and subsequently as an Associate Lecturer in Law. Subsequently, he was appointed as a Lecturer in Constitutional Law at Deakin University where he also served as the Director of the Deakin Juris Doctor Program.
Dr Bari’s primary research expertise lies in the areas of constitutional law, human rights law, public international law and Asian law. He has published research articles in highly regarded journals, including the George Washington International Law Review, the Journal of Transnational Law and Contemporary Problems (University of Iowa College of Law), Suffolk Transnational Law Review, Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal, San Diego International Law Journal, Commonwealth Law Bulletin and the Journal of East Asia and International Law. However he believes his biggest research achievement, thus far, has been the completion of the monograph, titled States of Emergency and the Law: The Experience of Bangladesh, which has recently been published by Routledge, London and New York, (https://www.routledge.com/States-of-Emergency-and-the-Law-The-Experience-of-Bangladesh/Bari/p/book/9781138051119).
Tanim is currently developing the curriculum of the LSU100 unit, which will be offered in Trimester 3 this year. This unit will provide introductory level legal studies knowledge and skills to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Legal Studies, Advanced Diploma and Diploma of Paralegal Studies.
Since beginning work at the UNE Law School, Tanim has been taken aback by the warmth of his colleagues. Outside of work Tanim loves sports particularly cricket and soccer. He is a die-hard fan of the Arsenal Football Club, UK.
